2010 SHS Girls Soccer Tryouts
Players are selected for the program through a series of tryout sessions. It is our intent to place each player in the program where she can make her most effective contribution based on fitness, technical capabilities and tactical awareness.
The Freshman team is our developmental squad for our first season players. It provides opportunity to players to be eased into a strong program, understand program standards and expectations and discover the requirements to reach the next level.
The Junior Varsity is more challenging. Players must embrace the goals and demands of the program and more deeply test themselves to prepare for varsity play.
Varsity play should be the objective of every participant. This is where the expectation to be at your best in all parts of the game comes without hesitation. Players here are expected to consistently provide a clear example for the rest of the program that is so high that the remaining players feel both encouraged and compelled to work to find their fullest potential and honor the program.
To attend tryouts, players must be on have paid the participation fee to the Board of Education AND pre-registered at the Athletic Office. Those eligible to tryout will be on an approved list given to Coach Miller by the Athletic Office. Player/Parent Contract must be filled out and brought to the first day of tryouts. Tryout dates are currently scheduled to begin on August 28th. Players should plan to attend all tryout sessions to maximize their exposure to the coaches.
Player selection takes a number of days and will be conducted on multiple levels. Sessions will focus on fitness, technical capabilities and tactical awareness. The coaches expect that those wanting to be selected for varsity will have adequately prepared to ensure they rank highest in these categories. Game comprehension, knowledge of the laws, individual work ethic, focus and attitude are other considerations for the coaches in making evaluations. It is each player’s obligation to make these decisions as difficult as possible for the coaches.
As selection continues, players are sorted into the three teams in the program. Freshmen who demonstrate they have worked to achieve appropriate fitness will normally be selected to play at least on the freshmen team, giving them this first season to move up or develop JV or Varsity status in future seasons.
There is reasonable likelihood that some players will not be selected. Players may be too far behind our fitness goals. They may lack the technical capabilities needed or not have the tactical awareness basic to their success, even at the sub-varsity level. The coaches must consider each player’s short and long term potential. Our major decision is whether or not we believe a player demonstrates sufficient potential to contribute as needed on the varsity squad by her senior year.
The first selection occurs after the first weekend of tryouts. Those who are selected to continue after the first weekend will be notified via e-mail. A second selection may be made just a couple of days later.
If a player is not selected to play in the program, she has the right to be told why. She need only ask.
